Kombi Life

And now for something totally different : I'd like to talk to you about Ben, whom I've been following on his YouTube channel (and his website "Kombi Life") for several years now : he drove all the way through south america, then North, all the way up to Alaska with his Chili-bought Combi!

As one can expect, this wasn't an easy task, as he had to disassemble the combi's engine no less than 10 times! But all this while keeping smiling, meeting hundreds of people, and enjoying fantastic landscapes!

So, in short : if you're cold during winter, go check his videos, it will for sure warm you up! And to help him keeping exploring, make sure you subscribe to his YouTube channel!
@Ben : Pura Vida buddy, thanks for sharing, can't wait for season 4! icone smiley wink

Good bye, shuttle.

A few days ago, the orbiter Atlantis took off. That's the 135th, and very last, mission for the american space shuttles..
Chris Bray was on the site of the launch of the first shuttle in 1981 (Columbia), and again for the last one ; hence this picture, took 30 years apart...

That's the end of an era, which takes its origins in the Cold War. Remains the feeling that with the disparition of this tool, the future of Man in space seems farther than ever.
What will we dream about after ISS is closed in 2020?...

Speaking of which, here's a pic I kept since Januray.
Shot by Thierry Legault (go check his website, unbelievable pics/vids!), who calculated than during the last solar eclipse, the sun, the moon and ISS would be aligned... for 0.86 seconds. And that would only be observale from the Sultanate of Oman. I reckon that guy didn't ditch the Math class. icone smiley laugh
So, he went there, and actually got the picture (click on it to see it full res) : bottom left is the Moon, 400.000km from us ; ISS orbiting at 500km ; and the Sun in the background, at 150 millions km.
Just for fun, the black dot bottom right is a solar eruption... the size of the Earth.

I leave you with a few links : a brilliant video, some 360° panoramic views, and a great galery of night sky pics...

Ni-night, everyone... Good-bye, shuttle.

Uncle Sham Needs You!

(sorry for the crappy wordplay, I couldn't help...)

Ok, I don't have high hopes, but I give it a try anyway : I have a big garage/parking issue.

I only have a small garage/box in the basement of a building, and I'm too old to play hide'n'seek with the other co-owners who prohibit me from doing mechanics' work ; additionally, the hosting of the Albatross was only temporary, it has to move by the end of may. Consequently, all my project are "on hold", which is seriously ruining my nerves.
So, priority N°1 now is to find a place were I could finally work at ease! icone smiley wink

Im looking for a garage/workshop/warehouse/shed, something like 30 to 40 sqm with electricity (or even just a plot of land for the Albatross), to store my toys, and more importantly work on them. And obviously, the whole thing has to bee affordable, I'm no Rothschild ; yeah, I know, such a place on the Riviera, I'm day-dreaming, but I need to give it a try, unless I'll have to drop everything... icone smiley sad

In conclusion, if you, my dearest reader, have the mere hint/tips/advice/knowledge about a place that would match my expectation, for rent or for sale, within a 20km radius of Antibes... Please, tell me asap! You'll have my eternal gratitude in return! And a picture of you on ShamWerks! Thanks! icone smiley laugh

Edit 24-03-2011 :
OK, I've found a solution... Far from perfect, but anyway : I've found a garage for rent like 5 minutes walking from my place, it'll allow me to store the Albatross or the Karmann, depending on needs. Meanwhile, I'll renovate my current garage, which I've been working in for 15 years, trying to make it more "livable".
Again, the solution isn't ideal, but it will buy me some time to organize. I have to face the ugly truth : prices are so high in the area, having a proper workshop isn't conceivable... I'll probably end up leaving the region for that same reason.
Anyway, that means you should expect some "workshop enhancement" posts real soon! icone smiley wink

Forkless Bike

Olli Erkkilä is a 28 y.o. chap from Finland, student in a Design School ; and he had quite a great vision when he created that "Forkless Cruiser"!

Go jump to his site, not only to check out that bike (and its construction process) in details, but as well his other creations, like that Solex go-ped shown on the left...

Amusingly, Olli loves design, hot-rods, 2 and 3-wheeled kustoms, and vintage vehicules... French ones!

We Choose the Moon

40 years ago, the Man set foot on the Moon.

I hardly imagine what could Armstrong and Aldrin feel, in their uncomfortable space suit, between excitement, fear, concentration, pression of the mission, during the few hours of their extravehicular activities...
To celebrate that anniversary, a beautiful website has been set online, featuring dozens of never seen before pictures (specially of the LEM construction and testings). Hace a look here : WeChooseTheMoon.com. Web site's online for one year, don't miss it!

On the same theme, the brilliant Boston Big Picture made a special gallery : Remembering Apollo 11.

If, by chance, you can read French, don't miss the airline captain Jacques Darolles story on PilotList.org about his meeting with Buzz Aldrin on a Paris-Nice flight...

Finally, for those who still think all these pictures were staged on Earth, have a look at the footpath of the astronauts still visible on the surface of our satellite...

Have a special look at this 81cm. long 300SL Gullwing (one of my favourite cars evah, btw), built from the plans...

Popular Science goes Google

Google Books again came with another big thing, by putting online all the issues of Popular Science Magazine, since the very first one issued in May 1872!

I assume, as you're browsing through ShamWerks, that's you'll be especially interested by the issues from the 50's-60's. And good news, these are just an orgy of shiny retro-futuristic covers!

More specifically, you'll find for example in the June '57 issue a comparative test of "foreign cars", featuring the Karmann Ghia Low-Light (on the cover), the BMW Isetta, the Renault Dauphine, etc... And in the April '58 issue, that's a Beetle you'll see on the cover, illustrating an article about the "8 best-selling cars"...
Furthermore, in the February '67 issue, you'll find a pretty nice article about "the cars you can build yourself", the main feature being the Manx Buggies! (wow, Bruce Meyers was young on these pics! icone smiley wink).
Yet more buggies on the cover of the August '69 issue, as of the March 69 issue (along with an article by Wernher Von Braun, funny to see how they forget the SS past of that guy 'cause he took'em on the moon... Whatever...).

I could keep on going giving you a list of links, but the best way to find out if for you to dig into it by yourself : Click here!
Thanks who? Thanks Google. icone smiley wink

50.57 knots...

Exactly one month ago, a barrier went down, while nobody really noticed. Well, OK, I can understand that the world economical crisis is more important in people's mind right now than this kind of announcement. Whatever.

In Lüderitz, Namibia, took place the Luderitz Speed Challenge 2008, an annual speed sailing contest, validated by the very uncompromising WSSRC (World Sailing Speed Record Council)...
And that's where occured that new record, and not the least one, as the mythical 50 knots frontier was breached! And for the sailing people, this was like the sound barrier!
Plus, not only its a KiteBoard that performed this amazing speed (and I do like kiteboarding!), opening a new era after decades of Windsurf hegemony, but it's a French who did it!

So, on October 3rd, Sébastien Cattelan reaches 50.26 knots, writing his name in history books as the first one ever making "one small step for man" above the 50 knots... Two days later, Alexandre Caizergues (yet another frenchy) takes the record back at an outstanding 50.57 knots, i.e. 92.6 km/h or 81.38 mph (1 knot = 1,852 km/h).

And that fast, on water, standing on a small board, that's huge... Here's a video of Caizergues' run for you to make up your mind.

Next step : 100 km/h... It took 10 years to the windsurfers to get from 30 to 40 knots ; kiteboarding being quite a young sport, in constant evolution, some think the 60 knots could be reached in the next years...

It's high time I go to Mauritius...

Shorpy

From time to time, you can find over the Internet one of those jewels, one of those web site that makes you forget the time, and pushes you to visit each and every of its pages. Shorpy is definitely one of those.

Shorpy, subtitles "the 100-year-old photo blog", gathers hundreds of old pictures (from 1839 to 1969, more or less), of a very good quality and in a high resolution. Have a special look to the categories Cars and Trucks, as well as Aviation... A real journey though time, snapshots of another era!
You'll find treasures like Joy Ride (1924), Innerwing Inspectors (1942), Pike's Peak Champion (1920, ci-dessus), Road Locomotive (1920), Ice cream everyday (1920)...

Whatever, hurry up, go have a look at Shorpy!

ZoHo ArtForm 01...

... when machining turns into Art.

Do you remember those wooden dummies used during your drawing lessons? Look, I've found way better than them...
Well, for beautiful mechanics enthusiasts, at least. icone smiley wink

So, here is the ZoHo ArtForm 01!
Not less than 43cm high, 6kg of bronze and stainless steel, all hand-made... 920 parts, 101 of which for each hand! And 85 mobile parts...

A great piece of engineering -and that's a soft euphemism- reproducing (almost) all the human body's articulations...

That's a must-see, and it's on Zoho.nl...

Via the excellent [Craftmanship Museum], which I stress you to read as well...

You probably remember Interflight Studio, which I recently told you about on ShamWerks?

I can't stress you enough to pass by the MotoArt website, yet more furniture based upon aircraft parts; I do want such a desk! (and a seat, as well...)

Don't miss their 2008 catalog (PDF format)... Nor their photo gallery, where you'll see step by step pictures of the realisation of each of their masterpieces, from it's removal from the original aircraft to its delivery at customer's place!

I dunno for you, but I know what I'll ask Santa Claus for next December... Well, if he wins the lottery by then. icone smiley laugh

Yet another link to a great site... Plan59.com, "the museum of mid-century illustration" : hell of a program!

The most difficult part have been to choose 2 of those vintage illustration to make this article, there's so many great pictures!
Here's a short selection : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, ... I give up, there's too many of these!
So, a bunch of 40's-70's US adverts-like vintage pictures... Pure gold mine to me!

I don't know for you, but I directly go back to this site... Enjoy!

Coast to Coast

That's kind of an old video, I just found it back...

A seven days coast to coast travel through the United States, from West side to the East Side, from Los Angeles to New York City...

All of that done in 4 minutes, on a highly cool music... Further more, aboard a 1966 Chrysler 300 convertible, wasn't that worth an article? icone smiley wink
Hmm... The time-lapse video gives me lots of ideas...

To be continued...

Volume of water on Earth

Here is a picture that made me think... I found it on the blog of Dan Phiffer.

On the left Earth, the volume of the ball sitting on Europe represents the total volume of water existing on our planet (sea water, ice, lakes, rivers, ground water, clouds).
On the right one, the volume of the ball represents all the air of our atmosphere (at sea level density).

I was a bit surprised regarding the volume of water, so I did the calculus myself : 1.4 billion cubic kilometers of water, that's a 1387 kilometers diameter sphere... From which only 1% of liquid fresh water.

So, and of my ecologist story... Back to the usual concerns of ShamWerks...

Be sure that if I see anyone of you guys, dumping his wasted oil down in the nature, he'll get my fist in his face...

InterFlight Studio

You know how much I'm fond of techy parts, especially those with an aeronautic origin... Furthermore if it's Vintage...

Precisely, I've found on the Net the site from InterFlight Studio, which produces some real state-of-the-art furniture... Expensive as Hell, you guessed it, but there here real good ideas to keep in mind. Well, anyway, if a rich ShamWerks reader wanted to offer me a present, the green desk above, made of a B-25 rear elevator, would fit perfectly my home... icone smiley wink

In the same area of concern, you may want to do a regular stop on the Comptoir de l'Aviation, there's pretty often some really nice aeronautic parts...

Polaroïd's dead...

That's it, the little picture with the white border, that you were frantically shaking while blowing on it, to reveal faster the image (which is useless, actually)...
The all-digital revolution had to go though this : February 2008, Polaroïd closes the last factory which produced the "Pola" films in the Massachusetts.

So, make sure you carefully keep your old polaroïd photos, and try to imagine how you will explain what it was to your grand children in 20 or 30 years from now... OMG, they won't ever believe us.icone smiley laugh

It's been long and difficult, full of surprises, but finally, I've got a roof above my head that I'm owner of... Expect lots of "deco" articles in the next months on ShamWerks! icone smiley laugh

Sony Bravia : colour like no other 2007

Take 2,5 tons of plasticine and 40 animators to shoot 100.000 pictures in 3 weeks, and make a 90 seconds stop-motion video clip...

The new Sony Bravia advert just cme out.

After the superb bouncing balls wave in the San-Francisco streets, after the brilliant colour explosions in Glasgow (both are must-see if you missed'em!), here come bunnies in the New-York streets. May be not my favourite one, but a real pleasure to watch anyway...
Ideally, to be seen in HD, clips are available on the official website (the making of film i great as well)...

Next episode in one year from now...

AirLiners / PilotList

Just two links today...
When you're fond of beautiful mechanics and of technology, like I am, you're definitely in aeronautics.

Airliners.net

As a starter, AirLiners.net, a must see ; more than a million of pictures online! Mostly big airliner (hence the name of the site...), from which many of them in rather weird situations, like on the famous St. Marteen airport... And a few jewels like this northern lights picture, shot in the North Canada... I let you search.

PilotList.org

The second link is a site on which I go pretty regularly. Not a single picture here, text only : PilotList.org. Sorry guys, that's in French only!
But if you can read French, this is a pilots mailing list, whatever their skills level, from the beginner to the Captain.
And, especially, we find there articles written by Jacques Darolles, Captain on Airbus A320 (but he usually signs with an hume "Conducteur d'engins" - Vehicle Driver...), author of the book "Le plus beau bureau du monde" (The most beautiful office of the World). He has a really great writing style, for those of you who, just like me, are dreaming whilst watching the aircrafts taking off,a nd love all those processes which are behind a long-haul flights...

To find back his articles, it's right here, on Pilot List.
If you read those texts, I recommend "Atterrissage à Kai Tak" (Landing in Kai Tak, Hong Kong's former airport, closed because too dangerous!), "Monsieur est un esthète" (Sir is an aesthete), "La Pâques Russe" (The Russian Easter), "TRPS", or the excellent "On a marché sur la Lune" (We walked on the Moon)...
Oh, you know what, read'em all, I can't choose...

Thanks Mister Darolles, you drive great machines...

Just a little web link today... LostAmerica.com, mandatory to visit asap, if like me, you love the fifties' design, especially from the US... And the special feeling present in old junkyards, abandoned gas stations, miscellaneous wrecks, from the same era.
A great photography work, almost exclusively done by night (!), plus some hints about the technics he used to get to this result... Don't know for you, but it sure gives me ideas...

And from the same author, way more pictures on FlickR... This one is great... And one more for Teddy...

1957 - 2007 : The unveiling...

I already told you about this extraordinary story of a Plymouth Belvédère, buried in Tulsa (Oklahoma), in 1957...
Here it is, she's been unearthed. And... Well, pictures will tell more than words.

First observation : in 50 years, we've done a lot of progress regarding insulation ; the concrete coffin got filled up by water, everything's rusted... And the fake enthusiasm of Boyd Coddington (by the way, have a look at American Hot-Rod), co-presenter of the televised party organized for the car's unveiling, won't be enough to forget the sour deception of all vintage cars enthusiasts worldwide...

Wanna know more? :
Unfortunately, I could have guessed it folks...

Guèpe Upholstery

Here is a link to a blog I visit on a daily basis... You may have already found the link to it in the left column : it's Jérome "La Guêpe" Gomez's blog (nb: "La Guèpe" means "The Wasp" in French, 'cause of his needles...).
He already impressed a lot of people over the Internet forums, like on the mICROCOSME Project, or on Soldeli's Karmann-Ghia.

Real competent craftsmen are uneasy to find ; those who have the passion, who share it, and show the way they work, are extremely rare... So, make sure you keep this address, and have a look at this website...

Waiting for the day I'll send you my KG's bucket seats, La Guêpe...
