Happy New Year 2022

Happy New Year everyone!
Well, let's do some expectations management here : let's wish for this year to be just slightly better than the previous one, that'd be a great improvement. icone smiley wink

Spoiler alert, real life being ahead of my articles published here (which is a nice way of saying I'm late on my articles) : the '59 beetle is back on the road! The picture above was shot a couple of days ago while cruising around the cape of Antibes.
I'm currently finalizing an article about the engine installation and first start, but it takes time to write, translate, etc... You'll just have to wait a bit longer!

Another article to come soon is the putting the Thing (181) back on the road (again), which has been quite a rabbit hole... Brace yourselves for a lengthy article there. icone smiley laugh

Finally, Santa Claus has been kind enough to give me a 360° camera, so I'm experimenting... And I'll leave you with two videos shot the past couple of weeks. Have a good trip!

Yeah, I know, it's been two years since I last posted here... But for those who wondered, ShamWerks is not dead! icone smiley winkicone smiley laugh

Those past two years have ben pretty heavy, and I did not have the opportunity to tighten a single nut at the garage. A new and very stressful job, the little one growing up fast, the death of my grand-mother, of my cat, moving places, a bit of an health issue, and still no electricity at the garage... Yep, life hasn't exactly been relaxed. icone smiley sad

But I didn't stand still though! As I had mentioned in my last post, I indeed ended up buying that house, and after almost a year of pointless discussions with the architectural review board (bloody Architecte des Bâtiments de France), I finally managed to get the authorization to renovate the workshop in my new backyard!

TL;DR : building is underway, and ShamWerks will soon have a new playground! I'm not telling you any more right now, but bear with me, it'll change in a couple of months! icone smiley wink
workshop building site
Let's face it, the web has changed a lot since I launched this blog, a bit over 21 years ago (first version launched in October 1998... Feel old yet?).
The type of content I provide is not of interest to a lot of people, especially due to it's redactionnal aspect, when everyone and their mother's on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok (well there are a few exceptions fortunately, like Rascals Cats, Olivier Relic...).

But ShamWerks will stand its grounds, with more detailed posts in the future. And maybe a couple of videos, who knows... icone smiley wink

Happy New Year 2020 everyone!
Take care of your loved ones, be safe on the road, and see you back here soon(ish)! icone smiley wink

Happy New Year 2018

Happy New Year 2018... Bonne Année 2018... Feliz Año Nuevo 2018... Buon Ano 2018... Gutes Neues Jahr 2018... Matahiti Api 2018...

As tradition goes, now's the time to wish y'all a Fantastic New Year 2018! (better late than never hmm?)
So, as usual, may you be healthy, happy, wealthy, oh-but-you-know,as-long-as-you're-healthy, etc.

And as per the tradition as well, it's time to do a short review of the year past, and of the projects to come in the future, reminding us that time goes by...

You may have noticed that ShamWerks has been a bit slow on updates recently. Well, it's kind of a transition period for me, there's a lot going on backstage...

Baby

As expected, and without an ounce of surprise, raising a lil' baby is a pretty time-consuming endeavor!

As a result, I have less spare time to tinker around. But alledgedly, it should get better a few months from now! icone smiley wink

And to be honest, how could you not melt in front of this smile? icone smiley laughicone smiley laughicone smiley laugh

(Whaaaaaaaaat? My son is the most beautiful baby in the world, I'm just stating an obvious, scientific fact)

Jack has hit the road...

My father, Jacques, passed away on November 17th, aged 90.

He died peacefully, in his sleep, at home, while keeping his wits about him until the last day (and also while chainsmoking a pack a day...) : in the end, not the worst way to go. icone smiley meh

Our relationship was complicated, and as he was bed-ridden for the past few years following a stroke, I had a lot to deal with taking care of him...

In any case, he leaves a big void behind him, and not only because he was 1.94m tall. (that's 6ft 4" for you yankees).
He returned to the sea he loved so much... With his departure, I'm turning over a new leaf, and it's not an easy one to turn.

Good bye "le Père", have a safe journey... icone smiley sad

Black-out

.
Direct consequence of the previous information : my garages were electrically powered through my father's apartment, since he lived in the same building.
With his passing, the lighting in my workshop is no more... And I'm too old to tinker around with a headlamp.

I could go through the administrative procedure to get a proper power outlet installed, but it's a lot of paperwork (and a good chunck of money, too!).
There's a new law in France, which favours access to power outlets for electric vehicles, but it's still a hassle to set up...

Long story short, all projects in the shop are at a dead stop until further notice.
But all this could change thanks to...

A real estate project!

I plan to buy a house, which boasts a really nice worshop!

Nothing final yet, and it'll take some time to sort out.

If it doesn't work out, I'll go back to the "garage power outlet installation" option.

But if it does, you can expect a whole lot of "workshop" articles for sure!

Job swap

Yeah, why not... Let's change all the things, amirite?? icone smiley laugh

So I'm changing jobs : new challenges, new exciting context, some travelling to be expected... Hoping I've made the right decision! icone smiley wink

It's gonna take a lot of work and energy, but I'll keep moving forward! #keepHustling

In Conclusion

The first thing is that unfortunately, in the short term, updates on ShamWerks will probably be thin on the ground.

But the positive counterpart is that if everything goes as planned, 2018 could be the starting point of many new articles! (including a collaboration... More on that later)

Anyway, that's it for now! Let's begin a new trip around the sun on our little rock, have a safe trip everyone! icone smiley wink

500.000 hits

500.000 visites!
One glance to the odometer :
Half a million visitors came ome this website! Champagne!! icone smiley smile
In July 2000 we celebrated the 5000th visitor... Damn, we did ride a long way since then! icone smiley laugh

One glance in the rear view mirror :
ShamWerks as of today, it's 19 years of online presence, 317 posts, 95% of which translated to english, over 450 comments by visitors, and over 5000 pictures!

Both hands on the steering wheel :
Even though probably no one noticed, there's been quite a lot of evolutions on the site, to make it faster, and up-to-date with the technical state-of-the-art. In particular, ShamWerks is now mobile-friendly (say "responsive" if you wanna look fancy), so you can read it on your smartphone or tablet! (I had to go through over 300 posts to make sure it was bulletproof...).

Eyes on the road :
Right now, I have over 20 articles being written, and quite a lot of ideas for future projects. Well, let's be honest, probably way more projets than I have spare time for... But anyway, expect some heavy stuff soon! icone smiley smile

In July 1999, we barely reached the 2000th visitor ; it took 17 years to reach this half million milestone... But if I follow the current trend, see you in Summer 2024 for the 1.000.000th visitor party! icone smiley laugh
As usual, thanks to all of you for your interest, I know many of you are long time followers. Have a good trip!

Precisely one month ago, on June 20th at 9:00PM, arrived Enoha, the new intern in the ShamWerks team. icone smiley wink

Let's face it : my new fatherly activities will certainly slow down the current projects in the works... But you just wait till I can give him a 13mm wrench! icone smiley laugh

ShamWerks turns 10 !

Ten years ago to the day, I was officially launching ShamWerks!

It was then a complete redesign of the previous version, namely "Da Sham's Webpage", after 8 years online. I already had an online presence since '96, but it was only a single Geocities page, not an actual site...

Along the last 10 years, it's over 180 articles that I have published on ShamWerks. Quite a slow pace compared to other blogs, but I always give priority to actual content over a quick picture without context ; and that takes time!
Speaking of which, the average length of my articles keeps getting bigger, it's now have tripled since '08! icone smiley wink

Recently, ShamWerks has evolved again to adapt to new medias : you can now browse the site from your mobile or tablet! The logo, too, got a bit of a dust-off... It was the perfect occasion to indulge myself to a small present to celebrate :

As usual, many thanks for your renewed fidelity, your messages, your help... Be safe on the road, see you soon!

And since it's supposed to be the last one according to the Mayans, let me be, mmmmh-kay? icone smiley wink

Anyway, Happy New Year 2012 to all of you, starting it with Audrey Hepburn should help making it a great year, dontcha think so? Hang around, there should be lots of new things on ShamWerks this year if everything goes as planned!

160.000 hits Pin-Up

160.000 hits on ShamWerks!

I'm a bit late with this pin-up... Last but not least, since she's none other than the legendary Marylin!

I must admit she's not my favourite though she's an icon of the 60's.
And The Huffington Post has just published a series of pictures of the gorgeous blondie : a set of more personnal photographs, less paste'n'glamourous, including crutches and a broken ankle : far from the white dress blown up by a subway vent...
*I* actually prefer these. icone smiley wink

Many thanks to all of you for your visits / critics / messages / financial support (hey, I can dream uh??), see you soon on ShamWerks!

By the way, a nudge in the right direction to the website Sophiality.com, launched by a friend o'mine (thanks for your help buddy!).

Sophiality, is a bilingual classified ads website for people in the Sophia-Antipolis area, sort of a local english-friendly LeBonCoin. Keep an eye on this one!! icone smiley wink

VSO : Victory in the Southern Ocean!

Sorry! This article has not yet been translated in english! Please come back later!

Happy New Year 2011

Here's one of the very last pictures of 2010, taken by my camera around 22:30 on December 31st. It's in Amed, East coast of Bali, during a tropical storm (it's rain season in Indonesia) ; after countless tries, finally, lightning stroke precisely when the picture was shot!
I'm preparing more pictures of that trip for you, I first have to sort the 1500 I brought back...

Anyway, back to the point : Happy New Year 2011 folks!
I've decided this year I stop wishing to people things they already have ; so, I wish you good health only if you're sick, money only if you're broke, etc. icone smiley laugh

You noticed ShamWerks has been less updated lately... First, my job did not leave me a lot of free time recently, but more important, I struggle trying to find a place to to mechanics, I don't really have any place to work currently. But I'm working on this issue, I may have a solution, to be continued... icone smiley wink

That's all folks, again Happy New Year 2011!

RIP Leslie Nielsen

Leslie Nielsen passed away today ; he was 84 yo.

Mostly known for his comedy movies "Airplane!!", and "The naked Gun", he was mainly to me, one of the actors of the brilliant 1956 Forbidden Planet ... The original poster of that movie has been on the wall of my place for years.

If you've never seen that movie, well... you must, it's a one of the greatest science fiction classics ; ok, special effects are outdated and the acute sounds are a pain for the ears, but the plot is absolutely great, way better than any modern movies...

I don't understand why Hollywood hasn't made a remake of it, like for "The day the Earth stood still" (crappy remake in 2008 starring Keanu Reeves of the grat classic of 1951).

Go watch Robby the Robot and have a thought for Leslie...

130.000 Hits!

130.000 hits on ShamWerks since it has opened! The perfect excuse for another traditional pin-up...icone smiley wink

This one comes from the very talented pen of Romain Hugault (his blog here), who has just release (in association with Laurent Negroni) the second volume of his "Pin-Up Wings"!

Pin-Up Wings is an art book mixing pin-ups and warbirds : what more would you want?!
Very well documented (both illustrators are actual pilots!), beautiful and detailed planes, along with some feminine high-heeled curvature... I, personnaly, don't need anything else, this book was on my shelves as soon as it was released! icone smiley laugh

I highly recommend you buy this one before it's out of stock, and becomes an overpriced collectible! The book is available here or there. Have a look at the same time as the book series "Le Grand Duc" from the same author, from which volume three will be available in two days...

Anything else?
Lots of backstage work on ShamWerks, to fix technical issues, broken links, pictures you couldn't enlarge any more, I also installed a new diaporama-like script for an enhanced navigation experience on the site... I know it doesn't look like, but I've worked a lot!

Coming soon, a worklog of the progress on the Albatross. Just to show it is actually progressing - and probably turn the worklog into a nice article in the end. That will help me providing more regular updates...

OK, 'nuff said , Sierra Hotel Alpha Mike, over and out, have a nice flight!

120.000 Hits Pinup

120.000 Hits on ShamWerks, so in order to respect the tradition, here is the ritual pinup!

As usual, many thanks to all of you for your loyalty, I know ShamWerks has its own small clientele of regular customers, coming back to the bar...icone smiley wink

Today's pinup is not only a sexy girl in a nurse outfit...
You probably already have seen this image. It's a picture I like a lot, not only because of the high-heels and fully fashioned/seamed stockings (don't judge me! icone smiley laugh), but more for the symbol it represents...

That kiss was shot on Time Square (New York) by Alfred Eisenstaedt on August 15, 1945 : on that very day, Japan surrendered without conditions (cf. previous article), ending the 6 long years of conflict of World War II.
This picture, published by Life Magazine, became the icon of the "VJ Day" (Victory over Japan), and of the resulting jubilation people felt that day. You may want to read on Wikipedia the story of this picture...

I didn't choose this pic randomly : first, in a bit over 3 weeks from now will the celebrated the 65th birthday of the VJ Day.
But moreover, this is a small tribute to Edith Shain, the nurse on the picture, who passed away last month; she was 91yo. ... RIP.

100.000 Hits : Chris Sanders Tribute!

Wooooohooooooo!!!!

100.000 Hits on ShamWerks since its opening in October 1998... Well, OK, 100.000 hits in 11 years of presence on the Interweb, that's not that much. icone smiley wink
But hey! That's a milestone anyway!

To celebrate that, 2 pin-ups, this time out of the magic pencil of Chris Sanders. His name doesn't ring a bell? He's the creator of Lilo et Stitch, of which I'm kind of fan!
The Pin-ups are extracts from his sketchbooks (limited editions, signed the author, of which I'm a proud owner!)
Read Kiskaloo, kinda Calvin & Hobbes with a creepy touch... And pin-ups. icone smiley laugh

By the way, go have a look at the latest DreamWorks production : How to train your Dragon, realisation by Chris Sanders!

That probably explains the likeness between Stitch and that Dragon... On screens for Spring 2010!

That's all for today... Thanks to all of you for your regular visits, messages...See ya!

90.000

90.000 visitors!

It's a bit late that I finally post the ritual pin-up for the 10K milestone, once again one from Gil Elvgren...
90.000? Wow, the next one will be a big step!

As usual, thanks to all of you for your visits, ShamWerks is very far from the hit scores of the majors blogs, but anyway, it has its used customers!

As usual again, sorry for the lack of updates on this site...

And as usual once more, I'll tell you I prefer write complete, useful, documented articles, instead of a single picture stolen from an other web site, without even a small comment... That's the way I do it, sorry for those who do not appreciate.

Talking about article, get ready for some wood working on ShamWerks in the next few weeks... Some botanics as well, as well as some Japanese culture... I won't tell you more, I have a bunch of pictures of recent realizations I'm preparing backstage. icone smiley wink

Thanks again for your visits, support messages, donations on my bank account in Switzerland, comments... Thanks to all of you guys, I do appreciate!

80.000 Hits... Happy New Year 2009!

10 times! This is the tenth time I wish you all, a Happy New Year on my website! Wow! icone smiley wink

So, Excellent New Year 2009 to you, my dearest anonymous visitor. May this year bring you...
Well, hmm...
Let's say a good health, a roof on your head and enough to eat, that's already a lot with things as they are.
And if this year allows us to play a little bit with old, greasy toys and/or do some travels, well, that would be a very good year ; let's first try to keep it going that way till 2010, right?! icone smiley laugh

I would like to use that post as well to celebrate my 80.000th visitor! Thanks a lot, as usual, to all of you guys (and girls!), for your loyalty and little, friendly messages...
I know, ShamWerks could be more active, but I must admit that the current freezing-cold winter down here in France has somewhat cooled down my creativity... Beside, I do not have a lack of projects! OK, thy will be my good resolution for 2K9 : make my projects move forward, and stop waiting!

As goes the tradition, here's a pin-up to celebrate the new level reached by the hit-o-meter. But not just any pin up : Bettie Page herself, the world class pin up and burlesque icon...
Who has left us to shoot pictures under new skies last month, at the age of 85.

Bye Bettie.

70.000 Hits

And voila... In early August, the 70.000th lost soul came on ShamWerks!

A world of thanks to all of you, for your kind messages, a lot of regular visitors were concerned about my long silence, and the lack of updates on ShamWerks...
Don't worry guys, this site is far from dead (27 articles being written right now!), but I like to take my time, I prefer not to post anything, than propose worthless articles.

Plus, my private, off-line life has been quite filled in those last months (good things, bad things, but in the end, filled in!), therefore I did not have a lot of stuff to propose here...

The traditional pin-up this time came out of the talented pen of Jason Meek, whom I like a lot the style, have a look at his work here : Ockham's Razor.

Thanks again for your loyalty... More news real soon!

A world of thanks to all of you for your regular visits ; it's far from the most known of the web (some of them have more visits in a single day than myself in a whole year!), but I know there's a bunch of regular, faithful visitors who enjoy ShamWerks' articles...
To keep up with the tradition, here's the usual pinup... Borrowed from HK-Engineering, a very honorable car restauration company, exclusively taking care of Mercedes 300SL (nothing less!)!

ShamWerks will now return to its previous at-least-weekly update ; I'll post in the next hours some pictures of what currently takes almost all of my spare time...

Till then, many thanks again for your visits and regular friendly messages, drive carefully, à bientot!
