VW > 1970 VW Thing

For Sale!

And yes, I'm parting ways with my beloved Küby...

It is with regret, but I don't have the time or the space to keep it; I prefer to refocus on the Karmann... And then, for more personal reasons, I have to clean house around me.

Work performed:
  • The 4 brake slave cylinders, the master cylinder, and the brake hoses are new.
  • 009 distributor, new dynamo regulator, new rear light lenses...
  • The 4 Colway CTrax MT tires have less than 1000 kilometers on the odometer.
  • The front rail of the convertible top frame is new (replaced with a NOS part): this part is usually rotten on the 181...
  • The convertible top is new (US import).
  • Complete paint job (excluding engine compartment) done in May 2005.
  • Floor painted black (Hammerite 2 coats).
  • Khaki upholstery redone from 3 original interiors, keeping only the best pieces.

Work to be planned:
  • Corrosion: Front right wheel arch: hole the size of a 2 euro coin. Some perforating corrosion along the floor... The previous owner had liberally filled all of this...
  • Minor dent on the left rear wing (my fault, didn't tighten the wheel properly... Grrr!)
  • Charging: from time to time, the charging indicator flashes a little... I think the brushes have reached the end of their lifespan.
  • Shock absorbers: a bit worn if you take a corner a little too fast... But that's not really the purpose of this machine in the first place.
  • Small leak at the right-hand reducer.
  • The brake drums are slightly ovalized, the braking lacks progressiveness... But it does brake.
  • It's missing the two sun visors

I'm selling it with many spare parts:
  • 8 panes of glass (to be refurbished, I'll supply the plexiglass for that),
  • a front hood, a rear hood, 4 doors,
  • Original shielded ignition coil,
  • 2 liters of the paint used to paint it, for possible future touch-ups.
  • Original Eberspacher heater removed but complete in a cardboard box (except for its exhaust, eaten away by rust).
  • A homemade system to have a double bed in the Thing: super practical at meetings!

Heads up, this isn't a show car! It's clean, it's a great car for cruising, but not a Top 20 contender! 😉
All photos are available on Küby's page...

I want 3800 euros for it... Feel free to contact me for more information.

Bye bye, Küby... 😔

Edit 2007/08/08 16:30:
I received several calls regarding the 181, and it was pointed out to me that I wasn't talking about the mechanics of the beast: it's the original 1500H single-port engine, not very powerful (44 hp), but torquey and reliable. It hasn't been modified; I simply removed its original military (armored) ignition and replaced it with a new 009 ignition, blue coil, and wiring harness.
In short, not a racing engine, but a truck-like torque (especially with the reduction gears!) and surprising acceleration in 3rd gear in traffic jams...

Here it is, Küby is finally sold : Bye Bye Küby...
